POSITION TITLE: Technical Writer

  • Produce technical publications for a variety of weapon and optic systems
  • Research and consult subject matter experts to collect relevant technical data
  • Ensure that language, formatting, and illustrations meet stringent customer specifications
  • Review and action customer edit request throughout the life of the technical publication
  • Interface with customers throughout all phases of the technical publication creation and maintenance
  • Support internal testing as required; including setup, execution, measurements, and cleanup
  • Analyze, interpret, and author reports on internal test data
  • Photograph systems and parts for technical publications using a DSLR camera and edit photographs to meet customer specifications
  • Administrative reporting, including weekly progress updates.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Diploma or Certificate in Technical Communication (or equivalent work experience)
  • Minimum 2 years’ related work experience in a mechanical technical writing or weapons technician role
  • Must have, or be able to obtain a Restricted Possession & Acquisition License (firearm)
  • Must be able to obtain clearance under the Controlled Goods Program and Industrial Security Program
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (French fluency is considered an asset)
  • Proficiency with the following programs is considered an asset: Microsoft Office Suite, MadCap Flare, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, SolidWorks Composer.
  • Previous CFTO authoring experience is considered an asset
  • A technical background and aptitude with an emphasis on Small Arms (DND Weapons Tech – Land) is considered an asset
  • Possess the ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Must be detail oriented, analytical, and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills
  • Must be able to follow processes and instructions, and take pride in the quality of your work product
  • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills


  • Office environment (Colt Canada and customer)
  • Manufacturing, assembly, range, and lab areas – PPE required
  • Must be able to lift boxes and guns weighing up to 50lbs
  • Domestic and international travel may be required (up to 5% of time)
